Innovate UK Smart Grants (paused).
From January 2025, Smart Grants were paused while Innovate UK designs more targeted SME support. That means: don’t wait on Smart; focus on active routes like BridgeAI, KTP, Made Smarter, and Horizon consortia.

How to stack funding (without tripping rules)

• Match‑funding discipline. Many awards require your cash contribution; budget early (including staff time).
• No double‑funding. You can’t claim the same cost from multiple public sources. Keep a clean cost‑allocation trail.
• SME status matters. Some programs prefer or weight SMEs—confirm your headcount/turnover thresholds.
• Regional wrappers. Pair national programs with local Growth Hub offers (mentoring, digital grants).

Fast application tips

1. Start with the problem, not the model. Define the business outcome and baseline metrics.
2. Evidence your demand. Show data volumes, user counts, SLA needs—funders want concrete impact.
3. Partners add credibility. For KTP and Horizon, line up the right academic/industry partners early.
4. Plan governance up front. Identity, consent, provenance, evaluations—describe your guardrails (NIST AI RMF is a good reference).
5. Budget time for compliance. Security reviews and data‑sharing agreements take longer than you think.

• Need a university partner to embed AI? → KTP, 12–36 months, part‑funded associate in your team.
• Short, focused AI challenge with match‑funding? → BridgeAI Innovation Exchange calls.

Funding cycles evolve, but your adoption rails don’t: identity, consent, provenance, and evaluation will make every pilot easier to fund—and to scale. Build those once, then use grants to de‑risk real deployments that move the needle on productivity and growth.
