UK Grants For Embedding AI

October 21, 2025

Grant programs shift—so here’s a current, copy‑and‑go overview to help UK SMEs plan AI adoption funding. Always check the live pages before applying.

Where the money is (now)

BridgeAI (Innovate UK Business Connect).
A national program to accelerate AI adoption with funding competitions, expert matchmaking, and adoption support—especially for priority sectors. Watch for Innovation Exchange calls (short, focused projects with match funding).

→ Example call (closed; shows structure/scope): https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/bridgeai-innovation-exchange-empowering-ai-innovation/

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP).
Part‑funded projects (typically 12–36 months) linking your business with a UK university/research partner and a full‑time “associate” to deliver a strategic innovation—often a perfect fit for AI deployment. SMEs can receive up to ~67% funding toward eligible costs.
→ KTP info: https://iuk-ktp.org.uk/ and UKRI call pages (e.g., 2025–26 rounds): https://apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk/competition/2184/overview/c599b17c-e13a-4e13-995e-53cc4d4508a1 and guidance: https://www.ukri.org/councils/innovate-uk/guidance-for-applicants/guidance-for-specific-funds/knowledge-transfer-partnership-guidance/how-to-apply/

Made Smarter Adoption (Manufacturing).
Regional programs offering advice, digital road‑mapping, and match‑funded grants (commonly up to £20k) for eligible manufacturing SMEs adopting digital/AI tech. Availability and grant sizes vary by region—check your local Growth Hub.
→ Programme hub: https://www.madesmarter.uk/adoption/ and regional pages (example North East): https://growthhub.northeast-ca.gov.uk/resource/made-smarter-adoption-north-east

Horizon Europe (collaborative R&D).
The UK is associated to Horizon Europe, meaning UK businesses and researchers can join consortia on equal terms and access funding. For older Work Programmes, a UKRI Guarantee covers successful UK participants.

AI Upskilling Fund (SME training).
DSIT’s pilot matched‑funded scheme (2024/25) supported SME staff AI training. While specific rounds may have closed, expect follow‑on iterations and regional skills funds—watch official pages.

What’s paused or changing

Innovate UK Smart Grants (paused).
From January 2025, Smart Grants were paused while Innovate UK designs more targeted SME support. That means: don’t wait on Smart; focus on active routes like BridgeAI, KTP, Made Smarter, and Horizon consortia.
→ Official guidance page noting the pause: https://www.ukri.org/councils/innovate-uk/guidance-for-applicants/guidance-for-specific-funds/smart-innovation-funding-guidance/ and Innovate UK Business Connect update: https://iuk-business-connect.org.uk/news/new-funding-and-support-packages-for-innovative-smes/

How to stack funding (without tripping rules)

  • Match‑funding discipline. Many awards require your cash contribution; budget early (including staff time).
  • No double‑funding. You can’t claim the same cost from multiple public sources. Keep a clean cost‑allocation trail.
  • SME status matters. Some programs prefer or weight SMEs—confirm your headcount/turnover thresholds.
  • Regional wrappers. Pair national programs with local Growth Hub offers (mentoring, digital grants).

Fast application tips

  1. Start with the problem, not the model. Define the business outcome and baseline metrics.
  2. Evidence your demand. Show data volumes, user counts, SLA needs—funders want concrete impact.
  3. Partners add credibility. For KTP and Horizon, line up the right academic/industry partners early.
  4. Plan governance up front. Identity, consent, provenance, evaluations—describe your guardrails (NIST AI RMF is a good reference).
  5. Budget time for compliance. Security reviews and data‑sharing agreements take longer than you think.

A quick decision tree

  • Manufacturing SME, want to digitize production?Made Smarter Adoption for grants + advisory.
  • Need a university partner to embed AI?KTP, 12–36 months, part‑funded associate in your team.
  • Short, focused AI challenge with match‑funding?BridgeAI Innovation Exchange calls.
  • Collaborative R&D with European partners?Horizon Europe consortia.

The road ahead

Funding cycles evolve, but your adoption rails don’t: identity, consent, provenance, and evaluation will make every pilot easier to fund—and to scale. Build those once, then use grants to de‑risk real deployments that move the needle on productivity and growth.
