If you are looking for app building in Derry, start with the job you need the app to do. That might be helping customers calculate something, collecting a structured request, comparing options or making an internal process easier to manage.
Blue Canvas is based in Derry and builds websites and focused digital products. We work with businesses across Northern Ireland and beyond. Bring a practical problem or an early idea; we can help you decide what is worth building first.

“App” can mean several different things. A browser-based web app opens from a link on a phone, tablet or computer. A mobile app distributed through an app store involves an additional release and maintenance process. An internal tool may only need access for a small team.
For a calculator, questionnaire or early product idea, a web app can be a sensible starting point. People can try the core task without installing anything. If the project depends on phone hardware, offline use or an app-store listing, explain that at the start so those requirements can be assessed separately.
You may also find an existing product already does the job. Connecting a booking system or improving the route into it can be more useful than commissioning a replacement.
Our own House Price Derry project combines a property estimate calculator with local information and a report-request journey. It explains its methodology and presents a guide range, rather than claiming to provide a formal property valuation.
DrainSurveyCost uses a questionnaire to help visitors prepare a checklist and a quote-request message. Its comparison tool helps people review quotes they already have. Blue Canvas operates the guidance site; it does not perform drain surveys.
These are examples of focused web products. They show how a clear task can shape the interface, the information needed and the result the visitor receives. Read more about them in our recent-work article.
Ask each app builder to explain the proposed first version in plain English. A useful proposal should answer:
Ask to see something comparable working. A screen design can show the intended experience; a functioning product lets you inspect what happens when someone actually uses it.
The main drivers are the scope and the work behind the screens. A public calculator differs from a member service with logins, permissions, notifications and sensitive information. Connecting existing systems can also require investigation before a firm estimate is possible.
Separate the initial build from recurring costs and later changes. Ask for a written scope, clear acceptance criteria and an explanation of what happens after launch. A useful first version completes one worthwhile task well; it does not need every feature from the original wish list.
If you are searching from Derry or elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Blue Canvas offers a local starting point. We are based at 20C Balliniska Road, Derry, BT48 0NA. Arrange a conversation first so we can understand the project and agree how to work together.
Location helps, but the important fit is whether the builder understands your users, explains the choices clearly and can support the finished product. Ask who will handle decisions, testing and handover.
A website may be enough if visitors mainly need to understand your service, see examples and get in touch. An app becomes useful when they need to complete a task with inputs, rules or saved information. Some projects need both.
Our website-building guide for Derry and Northern Ireland explains the other side of that decision.
Tell us who the app is for, the task it should make easier, what you use today and any essential deadline or budget. A rough example is more useful than a long feature list.
