ChatGPT Ads is available to eligible businesses in the UK and Ireland. The useful next step is to assess a specific offer, landing page and budget before launching a campaign.

This guide sets out what to check before a first test. Platform details were checked against OpenAI's official guidance on 2 November 2026.

Check availability and account ownership

OpenAI's Ads Manager availability list includes the United Kingdom and Ireland. Eligibility follows the country of the legal entity being billed. Creating an account does not mean every ad is approved or ready to deliver.

Keep account ownership with your business and invite advisers through the available access controls. Check the billing country, currency and time zone carefully: OpenAI's account setup guidance says these cannot be changed after account creation. Ad submission also deserves care, because approved ads can start running when billing and campaign settings permit it.

Understand what you are buying

Ads are labelled placements that sit separately from ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI says they do not influence the response and advertisers do not receive users' private chats. Eligible Free and Go users may see ads; paid plans including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free under the current guidance.

That matters when estimating whether the channel fits your customers. Access to Ads Manager does not establish how much relevant demand you can reach. If you want your business to appear in unpaid answers, that is a separate AI search and AEO question.

Start with one offer and a useful destination

Choose something your business already sells and can deliver. Write down the customer need, the market you serve and the action you want someone to take. A focused service page or product page is usually a clearer test than a broad homepage.

Before paying for visits, check the page on a phone. Can a reader understand what is included, what affects the price and how to get in touch? Does the form work? Who follows up, and how quickly? Check any claims in both the creative and the landing page against your evidence and OpenAI's advertising policies.

Do not copy a search campaign unchanged

ChatGPT advertising has its own campaign controls. OpenAI describes context hints as signals about relevant situations, rather than exact-match search keywords. They do not guarantee placement in a particular conversation.

Choose the objective supported by the account and the outcome you can measure. Check the charging model too: optimising towards conversions does not necessarily mean you are charged per conversion. OpenAI's Ads basics guide explains the current options.

Write the test decision before spending

A short pilot brief should record:

  • The offer, audience assumptions and landing page.
  • The total spending limit and who can approve changes.
  • What counts as a qualified enquiry or completed sale.
  • The review date and reasons to pause, continue or change course.
  • The consultancy fee and internal time alongside the media budget.

Use your own margins and sales records to set a sensible limit. There is no universal first-campaign budget or acceptable cost per lead. If the numbers only work with an unusually high conversion rate, revisit the offer before launching.

Track the route from click to customer

Use a consistent campaign naming scheme and tagged destination links. Ads Manager supports UTM parameters and reports campaign activity, but its totals are not a complete sales record. Its spend figures can also arrive later than click figures, so compare complete reporting periods.

Keep a simple enquiry record: source where known, whether the enquiry fits, whether a call happened and whether work was won. Treat attribution as evidence with limits. A form submission may be spam, a qualified enquiry may not close and a reported conversion does not by itself establish profit.

At the agreed review date, decide what the evidence supports. A small sample may be inconclusive. Continuing should be a deliberate decision with an agreed budget, rather than the default because a campaign is already running.
